The magnificent Art Deco façade overlooking the Seine, designed by Henri Sauvage in the 1930s, is the undisputed figurehead of La Samarataine, the department store known as "La Samar" to Parisians. Its entire 70,000m² have been carefully refurbished, restoring the glamour of the Art Nouveau sales areas. On the rue de Rivoli side, there is a new contemporary building with a breath-taking façade of undulating glass. The café-restaurant on the roof boasts one of the capital's most beautiful views.
